SXSW: Building buzz for your web project
The building buzz panel covered ideas and techniques for increasing the buzz for web projects without spending money on advertising. Here are the notes:
- on creating a brand
- make yourself part of the brand; make yourself, employees, and fans famous
- need a face or a central figure to the venture
- myspace is important tool – regardless of opinion of it, you have to be on there (Joanna Angel)
- attach a personality to a brand
- need to have exceptional content first
- never forget you’re a member of your own community
- content needs to be updated on a regular basis; as soon as it looks like nothing changes, people don’t come back anymore
- need to give back to the people that give back to you
- need to have a strong off-line presence – for example, holding parties
- perform search engine optimization
- the press as a driver of buzz
- press is a mixed blessing
- buzz just doesn’t happen
- become the expert - someone finds you when they need someone to talk about a subject
- people who are successful want to be mentors; find them
